My wife, Lorna, gave me a super birthday gift by treating me to dinner at my favorite restaurant! Of course, we went to Cafe 123 in historic downtown Opelika, AL. We shared one of our old choice appetizers, a West Indies Salad, which was a special on Saturday evening. It’s worth a post of its own but not this one. This post is about my entree which was the Cafe Filet. I believe this is the best steak in Alabama. I base that statement on my years of eating good steaks all over the state and even all over the country. My filet Saturday evening was the without a doubt the most tender steak I have ever eaten. And it was cooked perfectly. I would say it was cooked just south of medium. It was very moist and had the perfect grilled flavor. The melted blu cheese on the Angus Beef and the horseradish AU Jus enhanced the filet even more. The mashed potatoes and fire roasted corn were awesome side dishes! But back to the steak…I have no doubt that this dish by Executive Chef Eron Bass ranks as the best steak in Alabama. I challenge you to come to Opelika and try it for yourself. You will be glad you made the trip!
